Research Notes -- David G Brewer
From Scott Bumbaugh:

Stella W. Bumbaugh was born 24 September 1879 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the
daughter of John Wesley Bumbaugh and Malissa J. Schnatterly. She died 16 May 1940 in McKeesport,
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Versailles Cemetery in Dravosburg, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. On 6 February 1900 she married William Joseph Sample in McKeesport, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. William (Bill) Joseph Sample was born 23 June 1876 in Greenock, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania, the son of Moses Sample and Louisa (surname unknown). This marriage was Stella's
first, and William's second marriage. [William had first married Clara Gross on 3 December 1896 in
Reynoldton, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Clara Gross was born 26 September 1874 in Dravosburg,
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; and died 28 March 1898 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
She was probably the daughter of Jacob and Annie Gross, but I have no confirmation of that.]

Stella and William had four children:

1.) Melda Margaret Sample, born 22 February 1901 in Pennsylvania. She died September 1992 in San
Dimas, Los Angeles County, California. She was married to [unknown] McCaskey.

2.) Clyde Vernon Sample, born 3 November 1904 in Donora, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; died 2
June 1980 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In 1925 he married Edna Anderson.

3.) Melissa L. Sample, born 4 July 1906 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died 28 June
1934 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She was married to Charles Cupp.

4.) Harold Sample, born 21 February 1914 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died January
1970, possibly in California. He married Zoe Douglass, who was born 16 December 1915 and died 6 June
2005 in Glendora, Los Angeles County, California.

Marriage license recorded at Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It indicates
that William Sample was the son of Moses Sample. Moses had to sign a consent for a child or minor to
marry since William was not yet 21 years old. William first married Clara Gross. The marriage was
performed by Albert H. Davies.

Wedding announcement in "The Daily News", McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, dated Friday, 4
December 1896. It reads: William Sample, of Duquesne, and Miss Clara Gross, of Dravosburg, were
quietly married last evening at the parsonage of the Reynoldton M.E. church, by Rev. J.H. Davies.
They are a very popular young couple and have the best wishes of their hosts of friends. They will
go to housekeeping in Duquesne.

Marriage license recorded at Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Series D #3840.
It indicates that William and Stella were married by A. Dell Johnston. It also provided the death
date for William's first wife. Since Stella was not yet 21, John Wesley had to sign a consent for a
child or minor to marry form.

Kimberly Sample in an e-mail dated 12 Mar 2004. It reads: "My maiden name is Sample. I am the
great-granddaughter of Clyde (William, as my dad told me) and Estella Bumbaugh. My great-grandfather
is Clyde Sample (my dad remembers his name as William; Bill as it is written on the back of a photo
he has.) My great-grandmother's maiden name was Estella Bumbaugh. My grandfather was Clyde Vernon
Sample, and is the son of Clyde (William) and Estella Bumbaugh. He married my grandmother Edna
Anderson. My father is Clyde Vernon Sample, Jr. (but always went by Vernon, and still does). My
father is the only child of Clyde and Edna Sample. My dad remembers his aunts and uncle, Melda,
Melissa, and Harold. Melda got divorced a short while after she was married. He thinks she never
remarried. Melissa married a man by the name of Cupp. They had three children. She died young,
around 30 years old. Harold married a Zoe Douglass. They had one child, my dad thinks his name was
Doug. My dad remembers that Harold moved to California, and thought he died there, not in
Pennsylvania."

During a phone call, Kimberly Sample stated that William (Clyde) Sample went to work one day, and
never returned. Years later, the family discovered that about 1916 he had "run away" with another
woman, moved to Ohio, and married her there.

Both Mildred Bumbaugh and Glenn Bumbaugh indicated that Stella married a man by the name of Clyde
Bumbaugh. However, the information from Kimberly Sample would seem to indicate that his name was
William. See note below.

Note: I did find William listed with Stella on the 1900 census (see notes under wife). He is listed
as William, and it provided his month and year of birth as well as his age. Judging from this, I
believe that Mildred and Glenn Bumbaugh were confused between father (William) and son (Clyde
Vernon).

Clyde Vernon Sample, Jr. states that he believes that his grandfather's middle name was Joseph. This
is possible. The 1880 census records him as William J. Sample.

According to Clyde Vernon Sample, Jr., William possibly moved to Youngstown or Steubenville, Ohio.

It is my supposition that William Joseph Sample is the son of Moses Sample and Louiza [sic] Sample.
The 1880 census for South Versailles, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania records a Moses Sample (aged 33,
PA, coal miner, parents born in PA), wife Louiza [sic] (aged 30, PA; parents born in PA), daughter
Tarra M. [sic] (aged 11, PA), daughter Amelia (aged 9, PA), daughter Della (aged 6, PA), and son
William J. (aged 4, PA). This coincides with the information provided on the 1900 census (see notes
under wife), as well as the information provided by Clyde Vernon Sample, Jr. That William is the son
of Moses is proved by his father's signature on his first marriage license to Clara Gross (see notes
under first marriage).

Obituary for Clara Gross in "The Daily News", McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, dated
Wednesday, 30 March 1898. It reads: Death's Call, Funeral services over the remains of the late
Mrs. Wm. Sample, of High street, were preached by Rev. A. H. Davies at the residence; interment in
Richland cemetery at 2 o'clock yesterday.

Clara Gross is possibly the daughter of Jacob and Annie (surname unknown) Gross (1880 census for
Stoneburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania).

Note: Only on the 1880 census is Stella referred to as Estella. All other documents that I have
found record her name as Stella.

1900 census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania dated 7 June. It lists William Sample
(aged 23, PA, parents born in Pennsylvania, a pipe threader), wife Stella W. (aged 20, born in PA;
father born in Virginia, mother in Pennsylvania). The census indicates that they had not been
married a full year at the time of enumeration (the number of years married column is marked 0).
Also living with the family was Shannon Dixon (aged 19; date of birth listed as June 1881, born in
Pennsylvania; parents both born in Pennsylvania; an engineer). Shannon Dixon is listed as an
"adopted son".

1910 census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (012-0143-0007). Stella was living with
her daughters, Melda M. (9, PA) and Melissa L. (3, PA) with her parents, John W. and Malissa J.
Bumbaugh.

1920 census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (17-236-3-67). Stella indicates that she
is a widow, which would mean that her husband, Clyde, would have died between 1914 and 1920.
Estella was living at 405 Ann Street. Melda (18, PA) was employed as a store clerk and was living at
home. Clyde (14, PA) was employed as a laborer at the (steel) mill, and was also living at home.
Melissa (13, PA) and Harold (6, PA) were also listed.

Clyde Vernon Sample, Jr. states that Estella is buried in the Douglass Plot in the Versailles
Cemetery, McKeesport, Pennsylvania, but that her grave is not marked.

Stella is buried in Section T Lot 350 part S 1/2 of the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.

1930 census for Parnassus, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania page 12 A, enumeration district 131, line
25, enumerated 14 April. It lists a Margaret McCaskey (age 26, PA) living as a lodger with the
family of Joseph and Francis M. McCarthy. Is she the same as Melda M. McCaskey? She indicates that
she is single, and that both her parents were born in Pennsylvania. She was employed as a
stenographer in a doctor's office.

I am assuming that Melda's middle name was Margaret given the above information.

1930 census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania page 15 A, enumeration district 684, line
4, enumerated 5 April. It lists Clyde Sample (aged 25, PA), wife Edna (aged 26, PA), and son Vernon
(aged 2 years 9 months, PA). Clyde indicates that he married at age 21, and Edna at age 22. Clyde
indicates that both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. Edna stated that her parents were both
from Sweden. Clyde was employed as a laborer at the tube mill. The family was living at 112 Eaton
Avenue.

An alternate birth year for Clyde Vernon Sample is 1906.

Social Security Number for Clyde Vernon Sample #194-05-6338 was issued in Pennsylvania.

According to Clyde's obituary, his parents were William and Stella Sample.

Melissa is buried as Malissa Cupp in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery, Section T, Lot 350, Part
