From Scott Bumbaugh:
Here is the family of John Byers Neuman (Newman), son of Mary J. Bumbaugh and Charles E. Neuman
(Newman).
John Byers Neuman (Newman) was born 25 January 1852/1853 in Quincy Township, Franklin County,
Pennsylvania. He married Louisa (surname unknown), about 1879, probably in Adams County,
Pennsylvania. Louisa was born in March 1858 in Pennsylvania.
They had seven children according to the 1900 census. I have information on four of them.
1.) Charles Newman, born January 1880, probably in Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
2.) Amos Newman, born about 1883, in Pennsylvania.
3.) Luther L. (C.) Newman, born December 1885 in Pennsylvania. He married Loretta (surname unknown)
about 1909, probably in
Baltimore, Maryland. Loretta was born about 1889 in Maryland.
4.) Harry L. Newman, born December 1897, probably in Baltimore, Maryland.
5.) Newman (living)
6.) Newman (deceased)
7.) Newman (deceased).
Information gathered from:
John's birthdate is recorded in his mother's bible. Note: the 1900 census indicates the birth year
as 1854.
1880 census for Union Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, page 281, lines 27-29, dated 17 June.
It lists John Newman (aged 28, PA; parents born in PA; laborer); wife Louisa (aged 22, PA; parents
born in PA); and son Charles (aged 5 months, born in January; PA; parents born in PA). Question: is
this John Newman the same as John Byers Neuman, son of Charles and Mary J. Bumbaugh Neuman? The age
is the same, and the fact that their oldest child is named Charles might point in that direction.
1900 census for 3rd Precinct, 3rd District, Pikesville, Baltimore County, Maryland, page 209, lines
34-37, dated 19&22 June. It lists John B. Newman (born January 1854; aged 46, married 20 years;
born in PA; parents born in PA; driver for express company); wife Louisa (born March 1858, aged 42;
married 20 years; seven children with five living; born in PA; parents born in PA); son Luther L.
(born December 1885; aged 14, PA; parents born in PA); son Harry L. (born December 1897; aged 2,
Maryland; parents born in PA).
Note: The surname Neuman, as recorded in Mary J. Bumbaugh's family bible, is spelled Newman on the
censuses. I don't know if the family eventually adopted the anglicized version or kept the original
German spelling.
Information for Luther Newman gathered from:
1910 census for 12th District, Baltimore, Maryland, page 102, lines 79-81, dated 19 April. It lists
Luther C. [sic] Newman (aged 24, married once for one year; born in PA; parents born in PA; shipping
clerk for electrical company); wife Loretta (aged 21, married once for one year; no children; born in
Maryland; parents born in Maryland); and brother Amos Newman (aged 27, single, born in PA; parents
born in PA; driver for express company).
