Bernard is the author of the Male Family History

FAMILY BIBLE OF L. B MAYHLE AND MILDRED VICTOR MAYHLE

Bernard served in the US Navy from Apr 14 1950 to Feb 5 1954.He served aboard the USS
Gurke DD 783 from Jul 1950 to Jan 1954.He participated in the Inchon Invasion in Sept
1950.His ship was one of the "Sitting Ducks" who drew Enemy fire on the 13th and 14th of
Sept 1950 before the 15th of Sept invasion.His ship was awarded the Navy Unit Commend-
dation Medalfor this action.The ship was hit 7 times and only two crewmen were injured.His
ship served a total of 23 months over a period of three years in the combat area of the Kor-
ean combat Zone acquiring about twenty enemy hits and six wounded.Bernard obtained the
rate of Quarter Master 2nd.In his career he recieved the following decorations and medals;
The Korean Presidential Unit Citation,The Navy Unit Commendation,Good Conduct Medal,
China Service Medal,National Defense Service Medal,United Nations Service Medal, the
Navy Occupation Service Medal,Korean Service Medal with 4 Stars,and the Navy Com-
mendation Medal for Heroism in Combat.His ship was involved with the evacuation of
troops in the winter of 1950 and spring of 1951when the Chinese crossed the Yalu River
forcing our troops south.Thru the remainder of the war the ship was used in close shore
support for our troops,keeping further encroachment from the north. Bernard was dischar-
ged Honorably 5 Feb 1954.The personnel of the USS Gurke were made eligible to
recieve two more citations for their Korean War Service in late 2000. They were the
ROK Korean Service Medal issued by the Korean Government and the Combat action
ribbon issued by the Us Government for service in Korea Jul 1950 to Jul 1953.Which
makes for me a total of 8 Medals and 3 Ribbons.
Bernard retired from the Seattle Police Dept in 1972 where he served in the Patrol Division,
the Harbor Division as a boat patrolman and scuba diver,and in the communications Div.
as a radio dispatcher.Bernard is the author of the Male Family History and Victors Of
Fayette Co. Pa.


Juanita Y. ROBBINS-26

Nita graduated from San diego High School in San Diego calif.She was a Homemaker,Day
care provider,Housekeeping Supervisor at Kings Garden retiremant Center,in Seatttle Wa.,
a superviser/teacher at the Salvation Army Daycare in Seattle,and a teacher at Little People
Daycare in Spokane Wash.After her marriage to Bernard she endured the first eight months
of her marriage waiting for him to return from his last tour of duty to Korea.
