Notes:
Research Notes -- David G Brewer |
From Mary Duran (gadget11 @ msn.com):
As far as I know, I am the only living ggrandchild or Rachel Brewer. My mother was Hattie Victoria
Ray, daughter of James Bruce Ray and Mary Elizabeth Finn. James Bruce Ray was the son of Geo. W. Ray
and Rachel Brewer.
The information I have on Geo W. Ray and Rachel Brewer came from family records, census records and
"The History of Chickasaw County, MS" Vol I and Vol II However some of the information in these
books is not correct on the children of Geo and Rachel.
George was born in 1833 in Rogersville, AL. He died approx 1912 in MS. Rachel was born in 1832 in
TN and died in MS approx 1912. They left TN and went to MS sometime around 1860, They are on the
1860 Chickasaw Co. MS I have records of the following children.
Mary, born 1851 in TN and married John Harmond Dec. 18, 1878.
John born in 1854 in TN. No other info.
Caroline born 1857 in TN. No other Info.
Henry, born 8n 1859 in MS and married Neppie Peden Aprin 7, 1887 in MS. No other info.
Jackson, born in 1863 in mS, Married Mollie McPherson in Houston, MS.
James Bruce Ray (my grandfather) born December 4, 1865 in MS, Died April 25, 1938 in MS. Married
Marry Elizabeth "Mollie" Finn 3/4/1889 in MS. "Mollie" was born in MS 4/09/1870
amd died 1933 in Mississippi.
Calvin Ray born in MS.
Nancy Ray born 6/11/1871 in MS. She died July 16, 1952. Nancy first married William (BILL) Finn
After Bill Finn died she married ack Hulsey. Zack was born in 1898.
Gus Ray, born April 1875 in MS and first married Katy Finn born 9/1873 in MS. They married in 1893.
After Katie died Gus married Maudie Duncan march 15, 1908. She was born
8/20/1888.
I question some of this information taken from the "History of Chickasaw County, Mississippi" My
grandfather, James Bruce Ray was born in 1965. The book says he was born in TN,but the family, had
moved from TN to MS. The book shows that Jackson was born in 1863 in TN however the family had
already from from TN to MS.

See Garry Wayne Brewer's notes under Henry M. Brewer. From that note, regarding the dispersal of
Henry M. Brewer's estate, he says: "The last child's part was divided into thirds and paid to
G.W.Brewer, J.N.Brewer and G.W.Ray, suggestion a family of a son of Henry and Mary with three
surviving Children, two sons and a daughter. A William Brewer died in Wayne County in 1849 and was
survived by a widow and four children. The name of only one child has been found. The estate was
administered by A.J. Brewer, who could have been a brother to the Deceased. 1/4 of William Brewer's
estate was paid to a guardianship of a minor son, Joseph. H.G. Brewer, son of Wiley Brewer was
appointed guardian of Joseph. He appears in the 1850 census in the Henry G. Brewer household at age
18...The G.W. of the Henry Brewer settlement is believed to be the George Brewer, age 21,
with Elizabeth in the 1850 Wayne County census and also the Geo. W. Brewer, age 29, with wife Mary.
in the 1860 Wayne County, This is possible because, obviously, the wife, age 19, in the 1860 census
is not the mother of the three children ages 11,9 and 6. Possibly Elizabeth died between 1850 and
1860 and George married again. J.N. , could be the Joseph or another brother, if not Joseph, then
Joseph must have died between 1850 & 1855 when most of the payments against Henry M. Brewer's estate
were made. The other part was paid to G.W.Ray. G.W.Ray, in the Wayne County census, had a wife,
Rachel."
