From Garry Wayne Brewer:
JASPER P. BROMLEY LISTED AS JASPER P. BROMLEY WAS ON BOARD THE STEAMSHIP
SULTANA WHEN IT BLEW UP ON APRIL 27,1865, KILLING OVER 1800 RETURNING UNION
SOLDERS FROM SOUTHERN CAMPS. HE WAS GREATLY MISSED.
Civil War Pension for Jasper J. Bromley, first husband of Martha Brewer, dated this 10th day of May
1879. I Martha J. Sweeney do swear that I was formerly the widow of Jasper P. Bromley and that I am
now the wife of Wm. M. Sweeney- I am the mother of James A. Bromley, William Samuel Bromley, Pinkley
R. Bromley, Jasper A. Bromley and Abraham Lincoln Bromley, children of myself and Jasper P. Bromley
December. I state that I have a family record in my possession, kept in a family bible which contains
marriages, births and death in the families of my parent, and ancestors as early as the year 1802 and
down to the present time. It contains a record of the births of my said children above mentioned,
and the following is a true cop of the record of their births. James A. Bromley Sept. 12th 1853, Wm.
Samuel Bromley, February 9th 1855, Pinkley Randolph Bromley born December 13th 1859, Jasper Newton
Bromley, born April 21 1862, Abraham Lincoln Bromley, born March 28th 1864. I state that this is the
record kept as a family record and that the ages of my children above mentioned are correctly stated
therein and these are all the children of myself and former husband. the said Jasper P. Bromley,
living under the 16 years of age on 25th of July 1866 and he left no child or children by a former
marriage. I state that I have no interest in the claim more that the natural feeling of a mother for
the welfare of her children. I further state that I am able from my own recollection to state the
date of birth of each child regardless of the record above alluded to. I further state that the
midwifes who attended me at the birth of said children are all dead as I verily believe - I know of
no one of them now living, and belive them to be all dead. Signed Martha J. Brewer Bromley Sweeney
On the 6th day of July 1874 Wm M. Sweeney states that the father of the above mentioned children was
Jasper P. Bromley who enlisted in Company E, 2nd Mounted Tennessee Intr. January of 1864 and who lost
his life by the explosion of the Steamer Sultana on the Mississippi River below the city of Memphis,
on or about the 27th day of April 1865, being at the time a prisoner of war and under orders and on
his way to report at Camp Chase, that he had been previously captured by the Confederate forces and
had been exchanged and was at the time of his death processing on his way under orders to return upon
his duties as a soldier in the service of the United States; and that he lost his life in the
obedience of such order.
Martha J. Brewer Bromley Sweaney death date is in the application for pension of William H. Sweaney,
her second husband.
