Charles Edward Brewer of Waynesboro, TN was born October 2, 1929 in Clifton, Tennessee, the son of
the late William Walter and Mabel Frances Stricklin Brewer. He spent the early part of his life in
Waynesboro, TN including the last 18 months at the Wayne County Assisted Living facility. He was
united in marriage to Lucille Mable Thomas on June 11, 1955 and she preceded him in death on October
7, 2007. Mrs and Mrs Brewer lived in Sumter, SC from 1957 to 2008 except for briel tours of duty
abroad.
Mr. Brewer first joined military service at age 16 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then entered the
United States Air Forces and tetired after 26 years of service to his country. He was a member of the
Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Shriners. Charles was an outgoing, generous and caring
man. He never met a stranger and was loved by many. Mr. Brewer was an outstanding athlete. He played
baseball early in his Air Force careet traveling to bases all over the U.S., The Far East and Asia.
He then worked as a Master Sergeant making tours to France, England, and the Dominican Republic. He
was deployed to South Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retiring in Sumter, SC, he
managed the Shaw, A.F.B. Service Station for five years. He then worked with his brother in law in
Raeford, NC farming cotton, soy beans, and tobacco. He loved golf and played very often.
Mr. Brewer departed this life on Friday, April 30, 2010 at Alive Hospice at St. Thomas Hospital in
Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 80 years.
He is survived by a son, Charles Edward (Chip) Brewer Jr of Houston, TX; Two grandchildren, Alexander
Devin Brewer and Taylor Brooks Brewer; a brother Gene Brewer of Nashville; a sister, Rita Jane Melton
of Waynesboro; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by a brother, William Walter
Brewer Jr and a sister Patsy Barnett.
A memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 3 P.M. at the First United Methodist
Church in Waynesboro with Cal Hampton, Lea Thornton and Ted Alan Sricklin officiation. Burial will
follwo in the McGlamery Cemetery at Collinwood, TN with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County
directing. |
