...John and Jessie died that decade [1900-1910], and some of the children went to live with their
grandparents William and Mary Bowden. On the 1910 census, those children (Mary Gertrude and John
Burton) are listed with their father (John Madison) born in Louisiana.
I also found John and Jessie's children on the 1900 census. John and Jessie are listed at the bottom
of sheet number 14B, and their children Gertrude, Elbert, and Clara are listed on sheet number 16A
(not sure how that happened). They also had a son John after than census.

Mary Elizabeth (Burk) Bowden----Born September 14, 1847
Her Obituary-
In Memoriam
Mary Elizabeth Bowden
Sister Mary E. Bowden departed this life Wednesday morning, December 7, 1927. She was buried at
Pyles cemetery near her home. She and Bro. W.A. Bowden, her beloved companion had lived together 60
years, less on month and five days. Sister Bowden was converted early in life and joined the
Methodist church in Henry County, Georgia, where she was born on September 14, 1847. She was 80
years, 2 months, and 22 days old the day she went to be with Jesus. Sister Bowden had been a
consistent Christian since 1862. They, she and Bro. Bowden, came to Texas about the year 1870 and
settled near Douglasville, in Cass Co., Georgia, moving from there to Louisiana for three years, then
to Texarkana, and finally coming to Mayes Prairie where they settled for life.
She was a member of Mayes Prairie Methodist Church since its organization. Sister Bowden was the
preacher's friend, the door of their home always stood ajar for their comfort. She was a devoted
mother, loving wife, and a true friend to all Surviving her is her husband, Bro. W.A. Bowden, five
children and 18 grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends who mourn her departure.
A Mother in Israel is gone, a friend to humanity has passed on. Her race is run, her journey
completed, she has entered into the vale, she will not be back, But thanks be unto God, we many go to
where she is. We can only see her in fond memory, but there we see here face to face. We bade her
good bye for the last time on the morning of the 7Th of December last, but then we will say good
morning in our eternal home. There will be no more sadness or sighing, no more heart-aches, all
tears will be dried in that great reunion in Heaven.
