conscript in Cpt. Jasper W. Hollis' Co. Tennessee Infantry, CSA Listed as Sergeant, age 20. No
enlistment, mo in file, soldier discharged 2 Jan 1865. Soldier died 11 May 1885. Widow Louisa A. S..
C. (no maiden name or marriage date given.) Widow formerly married to Fracis GIPSON who died 10 May
1864 Lawrence Co., TN. Only child listed: William R. H. BREWER, born 19 July 1885. From report of
Special Commissioner, S. F. HAMPTON, 3 Nov 1896, Pulaski TN, "In 1896, Jasper HOLLIS lived in
Throckmorton, TX. He was Captain of Co. A, 54th Inf, C.S.A. Commanded by Col. Drewing. HOLLIS stated
"Soldier was killed by one of his own relations who was tried for said killing on a charge of

"Brewer was conscripted in the fall of 1862 by a man named BENTLY, taken from Butler Creek, Wayne
Co., TN to Clarksville, TN. He was gone about 3 or 4 weeks and returned home." Widow's application no

James H. Brewer, brother to Lewis A. Brewer and Richard M. Brewer was killed by his cousin George M.
Brewer on May 11 1885 by hitting him with a rock, on June 1, 1885 George M. (CATE) Brewer was
indicted for second degree murder: the state witnesses were W.H.Brewer, Lucinda Brewer,
W.M.Sweeny(James brother in law) J.LH.Brewer(James nephew) Leonard Stutts, Richard M. Brewer(James
brother) and Dr. Harry McClure. George M. Brewer spent a year in Nashville home for the Criminally
insane. The letter from his Civil War Pension state that he had killed a Kinsman James H. Brewer when
he was drunk. Brewer pension reads as follows: November 30 1895, Washington D.C. Respectfully
returned to the Commissioners of Pensions with the information that on a muster roll of Capt. Jasper
N. Hollis, Company Tennessee Inf. C.S.A. (without date) mustered into the C.S.Service in Obediance to
an order of the General A.J. Johnston by Capt. T. Ohara is borne the name of James H. Brewer age 20,
Sergent. Later letters to the Peniston Dept. state that James H. Brewer was capture by the 54th
Tennessee C.S.A. or carried from Butler Creek about 60 miles away and while making the trip began to
cursing the confederate soldiers and the confederacy in general and after that said James H. Brewer
stated before he was carried from home and after he left that he would remain in that gang no longer
than he could, having a opportunity to get away, said James H. Brewer did return and joined the
Federal Army, Company E. 2nd Mounted Tennessee Intr. Letters are signed by Enoch Risner, Richard M.
Brewer(brother) also 2nd Mounted Tenn. Intr. Sanders Brewer (cousin) W.M.Sweeney(brother in law)
Nancy E. Hardwick (sister in law) Sarah P. Brewer(sister in Law) note: Sarah & Nancy made their marks
X. James H. Brewer's brother in law March 15,1883 states that he was "J.C. Hollis, age 51 and a son
of James Hollis. I don't know why my father gave the note to James Brewer's son. He drank a lot and
Mrs. Brewer used morphine, and still does, I saw her son buy eight bottle the other day, he said it
was for her"
Louisa was first married to a man named Frances Gibson,but he died in Lawrence County, Tennessee in
1864 or 1865, a general affidavit signed by A.L.Robertson states as follows: That I have knowledge
of the fact by living in the same neighborhood with the claimant and seeing the parties frequently. I
know that Mrs. L.A.S.G. Brewer former husband Frances Gibson is dead because I saw his corpse and
help to bury it about the year 1864 or 1865. Signed and dated September 20 1892, by A. L. Robertson
age 71 of Light, Wayne County, Tennessee. Louisa baby boy was born 3 months after the death of James
H. Brewer, the baby name is William R. Brewer. Note: 3 Nov 1890, Saunders Brewer appointed quardian
to L.A.C. Brewer who is insane and in the state insane asylum.
