I am 74 years old, live on Holly Creek, I am the widow W.L.Hardwick, dec'd and the mother of William
Richard Johnson Hardwick and George W. Hardwick, my husband has been dead 39 years. I did buy the
interst of my son W.R.J.Hardwick, in the land. I took a deed from him for his said interest. The
R.M.Brewer whose name appears on the deed as a witness is my brother and he is still living. He just
wanted to sell, he got mad and in about three weeks after he married he came home and said I had to
give him possession, I told him I wouldn't do it, he told me he was going to put his mule on the lot
and I told him if he did I would turn it out, I did and he give me a good whipping, he went off then
and I didn't see him for a month of two, I took out a warrant for him and he was arrested and they
got after me, I mean his brothers and friends, to compromise, I told them if he would sell out to me,
I would compromise it and he sold to me and I paid him for it, every dollar. We gave a mortgage on
the land to get him out of jail in Florence, Alabama, and I then told him he could cut timber off the
land to pay off the mortgage. When John L. Bromley found out the deed for Richard interest wasn't
recorded he levied on the land. I have lived here for fifty-one year.

R.M.Brewer November 17, 1910 (18 pages)
I am 67 years old, live near Waynesboro. I became a member of the Missionary Baptist Church 40 years
ago, and was excluded from the church about two years ago. I don't know what offense I committed, I
have never heard. I asked old man Jake Copeland, what they turned me out for. He said the committee
notified me to come to the church, I told him they did not, I saw we were going to get in a row, so I
had a talk with Tuker Helton about it and he said he did not know, I asked R.M.Sims, and said I don't
know nothing much, I was one opposed to the Board System, I don't know if that was the reason I was
excluded by the Baptist Church at Waynesboro. Jim Gallaher and Charley Scott, were also excluded. I
suppose Brother W.R.Puckett was the pastor. I have had membership at Pleasant Valley, is now called
Cedar Grove. Pleasant Valley was represented in the Indian Creek Association, I attended church as
well as I could, I was always there, hardly ever failed. I raised a large family, I had 13 children,
I have 29 grandchildren. I paid the preacher some every year, sometime in money, gave him cooking
vessels which I was the agent, gave him pork and I think tow or three times I gave him a turkey
gobbler. I always told him it was for him and not any board. R.M Sims did tell me to come on back to
church, I told him I guessed I would never come back. I was a member of Pleasant Valley about 20
years, up to about 1880. I joined the Waynesboror church after I came up here after they built the
church here. We first organized down in the Northern Methodist Church. I was a member in organization
of the church. I had a letter from Pleasant Valley. I'm not in favor of taking care of any boards. I
don't claim to be so much Missionary Baptist as just Baptist. I think this country need the Gospel
preached right here at home more than any other place in the world.
