Wayne County Tennessee Newspaper; Friday, August 18,1939 Brewer-Jackson Wedding Announced Mr. and
Mrs. Lester Jackson of the Blowing Springs community announce the marriage of their daughter, Esther
to Willard Brewer of California. The groom is the son of Mrs. Lillie Brewer of California. The
ceremony was performed June 29, at Florence, Alabama, by Judge Grady Williams. The only attendants
were Edith Melton(cousin of Willard), Alton Fraley(cousin of Willard), Mrs. Grady Williams and son.
They have many friends who wish them a long and happy life . The young couple are making their home
in California

Blowing Springs, Nona Jackson, Reporter. Edith Melton, Bessie and Noan Jackson were at Allens Creek
Sunday. Reba Melton spent Sunday with Nona Jackson. Beulah and Marie Poag, visted Nona and Bessie
Jackson Friday evening. Mrs. Lucille Melton spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs Annie Fraley. Gus Poag,
who has been ill for some time is improving. Lester Jackson and son, Chester, attended the Legion
Meeting at Waynesboro Thursday night, Mr and Mrs Willard Brewer(just married June 26,1939, Esther
Jackson) Mrs. Lillie Brewer, and sons Willard, and Charlie, left Monday for their home in
California(note, Charlie Bowden is Lillie Brother and Willard Uncle) Verna McCormick is visiting
Chirs Martin this week. Mr and Mrs. Herman Nutt, Nona and Bessie Jackson and John Brewer attended
church at Morrow Valley(note Nona Jackson later married John Brewer) Mr. and Mrs. Almon Jackson and
children of Mr. Hope spent Sunday in the Lester Jackson home. Edith Melton was the Saturday night
guest of Nona and Bessie Jackson. Alton Fraley spent Saturday night with Junior Brewer, John Brewer
left Wednesday for the C.C.C. Camp at St. Elmo, Mr. and Mrs. Taft Staggs spent Sunday in the Chris
Martin home Clyde West and family of Deerfield spent Sunday in the Frank Staggs home.

Blowing Springs. Our Sunday school is progressing nicely. There will be a Chiristmas program by the
Sunday school children and a Christmas box on December 29th. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Brewer and Bessie
Jackson visited Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gobbell, Mrs. Ada Brewer spent
awhile Sunday with Mrs. Opal Davis. Lewis Brewer spent Saturday night with Lonnie and Max Stagg. Mr.
and Mrs. Taft Davis visited Mr. and Mrs. Ruby Harland Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer is visiting
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nutt this week. Miss Marie Robnett has returned home after a few eeks with her
uncle, Noah Melton.

Freda May Jackson spent awhile Saturday with Ima Doris Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Brewer and Miss

Mrs. Willard Brewer, Miss Bessie Jackson attended Sunday school at Blowing Springs Sunday evening.
Mrs Wiley Skelton spent Thurday with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Jackson. Bertha Jackson spent awhile
Thursday with Bessie Jackson.

Mr. and Mrs. Willard Brewer left Satuday for their home in California they were called away sooner
than expected because of the illness of Mr. Brewer sister, Mrs. Perry Neff of California, also
joining them will be Mrs. Brewer sister Bessie Jackson who will be visiting them through the summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Jackson and children, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Brewer, Miss Bessie Jackson spend the
night at Allen Creek. Ima Jackson is spending this week with her sister Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer of
Blowing Springs.

Grady Willard Brewer, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2003,
after a short illness. He was 85 years old. Grady was the oldest child of Grady George Brewer and
Lillian Bowden. He was born Wednesday , December 5, 1917 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He married
Esther Earling Jackson on June 29, 1939, in Florence Alabama. Esther is the daughter of the late
Lester Oliver Jackson and Gertie May Staggs of Waynesboro, Tennessee. Grady and Esther have two
sons, Donald Grady Brewer (deceased) and Garry Wayne Brewer ( Barbara), of Grand Junction, Colorado.
They have seven grandchildren: Mark Brewer (Berleen), Auralea Mohn (Michael) Noel Gibas (J.P.)
Jennifer Metro (Geoffrey), Damon Brewer (Denise) Jason (Angie) and Conon Brewer (Paula) and 13
great-grandchildren. After the death of his father, Grady; his mother, sister and brother, moved to
California during the Great Depression, overcoming great adversity to build a life for themselves.
Grady tried to enlist on Monday, December 8, 1941, but was classified a war essential. He was a
member of the California National Guard and supervised the German POW's in the citrus industry for
three years in Southern California; in 1945, he joined the U.S.Navy, where he served during WW 11,
earning six medals. After he left the navy, he worked for 29 years as a agriculture-trucking foreman
in Southern California. In 1973, he partnered with his brother, James Villard (Val) Brewer in a
television sales and service business in Los Gatos, California, and later moved to Orem, Utah, with
his family and brother's family to open Goodwill TV. Grady and Esther have lived there ever since.
Grady was well--known and loved by numerous friends and neightbors and was a faithful member and
Senior Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Provo, Utah. Grady has a sister Betty Lois Neff (Neff)
of Los Altos, California and was preceded in death by his brother, Val. Funeral services were held
in Orem, Utah, on Monday, April 7, 2003, at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, Grady was then flown home
to Walnut Grove Cemetery, Waynesboro, Tennessee, and laid to rest on Thursday, April 10, 2003, next
to his son Donald and close to his father, Grady George Brewer. Eight generations of his and Esther's
family are at rest in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Any donation should be made to the United States

Jackson Brewer, November 13, 1919 to August 10, 2004. Esther Earline Jackson Brewer, loving wife,
mother, grandmother and Great-grandmother, passed away on Tuesday Night, August 10, 2004 in Palisade,
Colorado. She was 84 years old. Esther was the oldest child of Lester Oliver Jackson and Gertie Mae
Staggs. She was born in Allen Town, Wayne County, Tennessee on November 13, 1919. She married Grady
Willard Brewer on June 29, 1939 in Florence, Alabama. Grady was the son of Grady George Brewer and
Lillie Bowden of Wayne County, Tennessee. Grady and Esther had two sons: Donald Grady Brewer
(deceased) and Garry Wayne Brewer (Barbara) of Grand Junction, Colorado. They also had seven
grandchildren: Mark Brewer (Berleen), Auralea Mohn (Michael), Noel Gibas(J.P.), Jennifer Metro
(Geoffrey), Damon Brewer (Denise) Jason Brewer(Angie) Conon Brewer (Paula) and thirteen
great-grandchildren She is also survived by two brothers, Chester (Pam) Jackson of Chula Vista,
Calif. and Junior (Betti) Jackson of Waynesboro, TN, three sisters: Ima Coffee of Nashville, TN,
Delcie McKinney of Big Bend, Calif. and Dinah (Jack) Vandygriffe of Waynesboro, TN and numerous
niece's and nephews. As the oldest child she helped her father hunt for rabbits, groundhog, and
deer. She helped her mother with the younger children, plant the garden, pick blackberried and chop
the wood. Later as a teenager she was a reporter for the Wayne County News and covered the Northern
part of her community. One day reported in the newspaper a young man from her community who had
moved to California was back in town visiting. That man was Grady Willard Brewer. Estherr eported on
his movements and who he visited. As a good reporter she of course went along to cover the facts.
Esther scooped the story and the man. "Poor Willard didn't know he was caught". When Willard went
back to California they wrote each other for a year and were married in 1939 and Esther moved to
California where "Her boys" were born. Being the oldest of 11 children, she knew all the tricks kids
could play. Esther said she had raised one family and the boys were lucky to be there, then she would
laugh and rub their heads. Life was tough in those days before World War 11, but Esther and Willard
worked hard and made a success of their life, from working in the packing house to starting a
Television Repair Shop in California and Utah. Willard and Esther were active members of the Baptist
Church in Provo, Utah. They had their 60th wedding anniversary in 1999 and Willard died in 2003, just
short of their 64th wedding day. Esther came to live with her son Garry and daughter in law Barbara
in Grand Junction, CO in April 2003. A visitation will take place on Saturday, August 14, at the
Callahan-Edfast Morturary form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a visitation will be help at Shackelford Funeral
Home, August 17, from 6 t o 8 p.m. and the funeral will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August
18, 2004 at Shackelford Funeral Home 104 Hill Street, Waynesboro, Tennessee, 38485. Memorial
contributions may be made to: The Alzheimer's Association, 761 Rood Ave, Grand Junction, CO 81501 or
to Home Front Heroes in Grand Junction. Burial will be next to her husband Grady Willard and son
Donald Grady Brewer at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Esther always said "It would be nice to be buried next
to family, where the dogwood blooms, then on Resurrection Day, I can see those smiling faces once
more when they come forth to meet their Savior "Jesus Christ". |
