Notes:
Notes from Bernard Mayhle -- David G Brewer (calvin.brewer-family.org)
According to Lenneth Britt who was about
6 years old at the time, Lenneth said that when great uncle
David came to Illinois in 1830 from Oklahoma to attend his brother George C
Victors Funeral he had a young part-indian man driving his automobile.Uncle
David showed us how he could dance the Charleston and the Jig.He was 83
years old at the time and thrilled us with his stories of "pioneer" life on the
praire. For instance,he said that when they might be in danger, one person
would guard the cave entrance while another could get some sleep.I was
especially impressed with his narrative of how they obtained water to drink
when the indians had poisoned the waterholes. He told us that in the early
mornings they would tie a blanket to a rope and to their saddle horns and
ride their pony on a fast run (I hadnt learned the word gallop) dragging the
blanket over the dew wet grass. They would wring the blanket to get water
to drink.
David had gone to Oklahoma at the age of about 20 in 1867.
