1918 - From "Old and New Westmoreland", by John N. Boucher and Fenwick T. Hedley
  American Historical Society 1918
A History of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania

  Frank D. Bumbaugh
Frank D. Bumbaugh, the Capable and energetic vice-president and manager
of the Monessen Foundry and machine Company, is a member of a family
which has been most closely identified with the growth and development
of the great steel industry, in that part of Pennsylvania. He is a son
of James and Isabel (Peterson) Bumbaugh, both of whom are natives of old
Virginia. Mr. Bumbaugh, Sr., was an expert financier, a pioneer in the
iron and steel business in West Virginia, and operated one of the old
charcoal furnaces of that time. He removed to McKeesport, Pennsylvania,
in 1869, and was there identified with the steel and iron manufacturing
business until his death in 1877. He was a descendant of a family which
came originally from Saxony, Germany, the immigrant ancestor, Andrew
Bumbaugh, having come to this country prior to the Revolution. The
Bumbaugh family has been prominent for many years and furnished soldiers
for the Patriot Army in America's war for independence. The original
place of settlement was eastern Pennsylvania and from here the members
of the family went to Virginia.

In this same book it mentions William S. Bumbaugh b. in Morgantown, WV
October 26, 1866 to James and Isabel. He was the youngest of 12
children. His mother died when was 1 1/12 and he went to his sister's in
McKeesport to live and at the age of eleven his sister died.

[Note: Checked 1870 Census, McKeesport, Allegheny, Pennsylvania page by page and found no Bumbaughs]

From Scott Bumbaugh (bumba@lcc.net):

Scott Bumbaugh Research Notes -- David G Brewer
Here is the information I have on James Bumbaugh. He is my great-great-great-grandfather.

James Bumbaugh, born 16 February 1818 (possibly 1819) in Pennsylvania. [My suspicion is that he was
born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but that is unsubstantiated.]. He died 13 November 1879 in
McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.

James married Isabella Peterson about 1839, probably in Pennsylvania.

Isabella Peterson was born about 1824/1825 in Virginia. I don't know who her parents were. However,
there is a possibility that she is the daughter of Joseph Peterson and Caroline Shuff. I believe
that Isabella died about 1868 in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia.

James and Isabella had twelve children. However, I have only documented ten for sure:

1.) Michael Bumbaugh, born about 1840 in Pennsylvania. [Note: I never find Michael enumerated with
his parents. It is conjecture on my part that he is their son. He does show up on the 1860 census
for Fayette County, Pennsylvania living near them.]

2.) Eliza J. Bumbaugh, born about 1842 in Pennsylvania

3.) Mary Bumbaugh, born about 1844 in Pennsylvania.

4.) Emily Bumbaugh, born about 1848 in Virginia, possibly in Rockingham County.

5.)  Caroline (Carrie) Frances Bumbaugh, born 28 September 1849 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania;
died 3 April 1924 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She married Hans Roland Hardman
about 1867 in West Virginia. Hans Roland Hardman was the son of George H. Hardman and Nancy Blake.
Hans was born 30 November 1846 in Virginia, and died 28 February 1925 in East McKeesport, Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania. Caroline and Hans are buried in the Richland Cemetery, Dravosburg, Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania. They had eight children. I will send you the information on them later.

6.) John Wesley Bumbaugh [my great-great-grandfather, was born 8 December 1852 in Virginia (possibly
Rockingham County). He died 1 September 1921 in Dravosburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. On 3
August 1873 he married Malissa J. Schnatterly [yes, her name is spelled Malissa], probably in Fayette
County, Pennsylvania. Malissa J. Schnatterly was the daughter of Henry Walters Schnatterly and Jane
Campbell. Malissa was born 30 March 1855 in New Geneva, Nicholson Township, Fayette County,
Pennsylvania, and died 8 January 1924 in Dravosburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. John and
Malissa are buried in the Richland Cemetery, Dravosburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They had
thirteen children. I will send you the information on them later.

7.) Joseph Bumbaugh, born about 1854 in Virginia.

8.) R. Bumbaugh, born about 1861 in Pennsylvania, probably in Fayette County. I only know her by
her initial R.

9.) Frank Downey Bumbaugh, born 25 August 1863 in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He died
1 February 1935 in Monessen, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Grandview
Cemetery in Monessen. Frank was married twice. His first wife was Anna J. Hartman/ Edmonson. She
was the daughter [presumably] of Isaac Edmonson and [unknown first name] Crow. Frank and Anna were
married on 11 July 1883 in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Anna was born in 1866 in
McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and died 4 May 1893 in McKeesport, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. She is buried in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
Frank and Anna had four children. I will send you the information on them later. After Anna's
death, Frank married Sarah Jane Taylor, the daughter of Robert Taylor and Elizabeth McFarland. Frank
and Sarah were married 12 December 1895 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sarah was
born in October 1866 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I have no information on her
death. Frank and Sarah had four children. I will send you their information at a later date.

10.)  William Sherman Bumbaugh, born 26 October 1866 in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia;
died 1928 in Belle Vernon, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Grandview Cemetery
in Monessen, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. William married J.C. Dora Taylor on 4 November 1889
in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Robert Taylor and Elizabeth
McFarland, and sister to Sarah Jane Taylor, the second wife of Frank Downey Bumbaugh. Dora Taylor
was born 9 October 1870 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I have no information on her
death. William and Dora had two children. I will send you the information on them at a later date.

11.) Albert Bumbaugh, born about 1868 in Pennsylvania. I have no other information on him.

12.) Unknown Bumbaugh

Information gathered from:

1850 US Census for Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Head of household is Michael
Bumbaugh. It indicates that James was born in Maryland. It indicates that he was 31 and was a
founder. NOTE: James was not living here. He was actually living in Rockingham County, Virginia.
See below.

1850 census for 56th District, Rockingham County, Virginia, page 211, line 1, enumerated 25 November.
It lists James Bumbock (32, PA), Isabella Brumbock (26, VA), Eliza Bumbock (8, VA), Mary Bumbock (6,
VA), Emily Bumbock (3, VA), Caroline Brumbock (2, VA), and Sarah Peterson (16, VA). Is Sarah
Isabella's sister? Michael, whom I had assumed was a son, is not listed with the family. Does he
belong to them? If not, how does he tie in?

1860 Census for Springhill Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, dated 1 August, page 120, lines
22-28. It lists Jas Bombaugh [sic] (age 42, PA, miner), Isabella [maybe Isabelle] (36, PA), Eliza
J. (18, PA), Mary (16, PA), Carolin [sic] (11, PA), Jno W. (8, VA); and Joseph (6, VA).

I could not locate James Bumbaugh on the 1870 census for Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, or West
Virginia.

James Bumbaugh is buried in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery in McKeesport, Pennsylvania
(Section N/S Lot 0). There is no marker.

"Old and New Westmoreland" pages 256-258. See below.

The biographical sketches indicates that there were 12 children born to this family. The letter from
Frank T. Bumbaugh indicates ten children, five males and five females, although he only names four
of them. Nine have been identified, and one with an initial. The 1880 Census for Lyon Township,
Preston County, West Virginia indicates a daughter listed only as "R." She would have been the fifth
daughter. At the time of the 1880 Census, she was 19. There is a gap in births between 1854 and
1861. It is likely the two missing children fall into this gap. Michael Bumbaugh was listed as a
single male on the 1860 Census, and not with his father and mother. It is a supposition that he is
their son. No other Bumbaugh families were found on this particular census for Fayette County,
though Michael Bumbaugh (Michel Bombaugh), was living with William Davis and Emily Bumbaugh Davis
(his son-in-law and daughter). Isabella Peterson possibly died in childbirth, or shortly thereafter.
The biographical sketch for William Sherman Bumbaugh indicates that Isabella Peterson died when he
(William) was one and a half years old. This would be during 1868, the same year Albert was born.

Letter dated 30 October 1973 from Frank T. Bumbaugh (16 West Edinburgh Road, Ocean City, New Jersey
98226) to Robert Edwards Bumbaugh, Jr.

Charles V. Jamison indicates that James was also known as Jack. However, I have never seen this name
used on any documents. Jamison also states that James Bumbaugh died in 1893. This seems to
contradict other information indicating that he died much earlier.

Charles Jamison indicates that Isabella Peterson died in 1869.

Isabella was possibly born in Pennsylvania.

Are Isabella and Sarah Peterson the daughters of William Peterson (aged 53, Virginia) who is found on
the 1850 census for the 56th enumeration district, Rockingham County, Virginia, page 67, enumerated
27 August? It appears that William was twice married. A 24 year son (?) is living with him, and his
wife is listed as 31 years old. [Note: probably not. See information below.]

E-mail from Jane Doughty and James Messersmith dated 22 September 2005. It reads: Jim, I was just
contacted by a descendant of Isabella Peterson of Rockingham County, VA. He said that a Sarah
Peterson was living with Isabella and her husband, James Bumbaugh, in the 1850 census. He was
wondering if Sarah might be a sister of Isabella. I was thinking that Sarah might be the daughter of
my William, since she was not living with him and his second wife, Melvina, in the 1850 census like
my ancestor, Charles, was. Do you know about another brother of William's Joseph? Supposedly, both
William and Joseph had daughters named Sarah (Jane Doughty). I stopped by the Library of VA
yesterday on the way to the airport. One thing I checked was the abstract of early Shenandoah County
wills. I found the will of your ancestor Charles Beasley. In his will he mentioned his three
grandchildren: Mary, Charles and Sarah Peterson, children of his deceased daughter. The will was
dated sometime in 1828 (I'm not looking at my notes note). This seems to preclude Scott's Isabella
as being the daughter of William Peterson. In addition, the Sarah Peterson who was living with
Isabella and James Bumbaugh on the 1850 census was 16 years old, as I recall. If her age was
reported correctly, that would also seem to suggest that the Sarah living with James and Isabella
Bumbaugh was NOT the daughter of William." (Jim Messersmith)

[Dave, please note: James Messersmith never e-mailed me back. I tried contacting him several times,
but to no avail.]

NOTE: It is my SUPPOSITION that Joseph is the father of Isabella. This supposition may well turn
out to be incorrect.

1850 census for the 56th enumeration district, Rockingham County, Virginia, page 67, enumerated 27
August. It lists William Peterson (aged 53, VA). It appears that William was twice married. A 24
year son (?) is living with him, and his wife is listed as 31 years old. Is he the father of
Isabella and perhaps Sarah Peterson? [Note: Probably NOT. See note under Isabella Peterson].

1860 census for Third Magisterial District, Meredith's Tavern, Marion County, Virginia, dated 8 July,
page 551, lines 33-36. It lists Joseph Peterson (aged 61, PA, moulder), Mary (aged 49, Maryland),
Arbelan (?) (female, aged 15, Maryland), and Miriam (aged 13, PA).

NOTE: on the 1860 census for the 2nd Magisterial District, Nuzum's Mills, Marion County, Virginia,
dated 22 June, page 499, line 26 is listed an Isaac Peterson (aged 22, PA, laborer). He is in the
home of Thaddeus E. Graham (aged 29, VA, farmer), Sarah (aged 24, VA), and Rebecca E. (aged 6, VA).
Is this Isaac the son of Joseph Peterson listed above?

E-mail from Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr. dated 11 September 2005. It reads: William Peterson of
Rockingham County, Virginia. Scott: I contacted you because you were trying to verify that Isabella
Peterson who married James Bumbaugh was the daughter of William Peterson. While I have no proof that
she was, I suspect that she was. I'll post on the Rockingham RootsWeb mail list to see if someone can
help with the information. I am the great-great-great-grandson of Isaac Peterson and Judith Pummell.
They married in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1810. Isaac was the son of Israel and Maria
Peterson, and he was born 26 December 1784 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. I have known this for
several years. I have suspected that William Peterson in Rockingham County was his brother, but had
no proof of it until a do or two ago. I found WIlliam's birth record, and he was born 22 March 1792
in York County, Pennsylvania, also to Israel and Maria Peterson. I have also verified several other
children for Israel and Maria, including a daughter named Isabella. This Isabella married Frederick
Holtzman on 12 April 1819 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

E-mail from Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr. dated 11 September 2005. It reads: Scott: I forgot to
mention that William Peterson was first married to Sarah Beasely whom he married 20 July 1819 in
Shenandoah County, Virginia. He married Melvina Looker on 17 August 1836 in Rockingham County.

E-mail from Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr. dated 12 September 2005. It reads: Scott: Thanks for the
additional information on your family. I was especially interested in their involvement with the
iron industry. on the 1850 census my Isaac Peterson, who lived in Augusta County, Virginia at the
time, indicated that his occupation was collier. . . . So far I have been able to find these
children of Israel and Maria Peterson:
Israel--married Polly Pummell in 1808 in Shenandoah County, Virginia; appeared on the 1810 census and
disappeared. I don't know when he was born, but assume he was older than my Isaac since he married
first.
Isaac--married Judith Pummell in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1810, moved to Rockingham, then to
Rockbridge and then back north to Augusta where he died between 1860 and 1870.
William--I have told you about all I can about him.
Juliana--haven't been able to find anything except her birth record.
Isabella--married Frederick Holtzman in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1819.
Joseph--married Caroline Shuff in 1824 in Shenandoah Co., moved to Pennsylvania, then to West
Virginia. Maybe he followed your family. He last appeared on the 1860 census in Marion County,
Virginia (now West Virginia). Occupation was 'moulder".
!On the 1820 census, Joseph was enumerated in Shenandoah County, with one female over 45. I assume
this was his mother Maria. On the 1830 census, he was still in Shenandoah with one female 5 to 10,
and one female 60-70. I assume that the 5 to 10 year old female was his daughter and his first wife
had died. I assume that the 60 to 70 year old female was his mother. This means she was born
between 1760 and 1770, which seems about right since my Isaac was born at 26 December 1784.

E-mail from Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr. dated 20 September 2005. It reads: I think I have
discovered another child of Israel Peterson and Maria ???. John Peterson was born in 1803 in PA, and
was on the 1840 census in Shenandoah County, and lived the remainder of his life in nearby Warren
County, VA. He always listed his occupation as "foundryman". According to his tombstone
inscription, he died 18 October 1879. Based on that I checked the 1880 mortality schedule and found
him. It indicated that his father was born "on ocean." Very interesting. Remember that William
Peterson said his father was born in Delaware. In the Joseph Peterson household on the 1830 census
in Shenandoah County, there is a male between 20 and 30. I'm sure that is John. Also, and what led
me to John, was I found a marriage in Shenandoah County for Elijah Peterson to Marry Virginia
Norcross in 1873. I remembered the Norcross name because one of Isabella Peterson Holtzman's
daughter's married a Norcross. Sure enough it was her daughter. Then I found Elijah living with
John Peterson in Warren County on the 1870 and earlier censuses. If I am correct and John Peterson
was the son of Israel Peterson, then Elijah Peterson and Virginia Norcross were first cousins, once
removed. I found a tree today on Rootsweb's World Connect Project that included a lot of stuff on
William Peterson. It does not have your Isabella. You'll be able to find it at:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:3123819. It is the family tree of Jane Doughty and was
posted about a month ago. I have sent her an email but have not heard from her yet.
