Research Notes -- David G Brewer
From Scott Bumbaugh:

Hayes Vernon Bumbaugh was born 21 November 1886 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; and
died 10 September 1932 in Monessen, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a son of John Wesley
Bumbaugh and Malissa J. Schnatterly.

Hayes first married Hazel Kirk Sims on 16 June 1908 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Hazel Kirk Sims was born 3 June 1889 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of
Frank E. Sims and Lulu B. [surname unknown]. The marriage was dissolved through divorce on 17 July
1909 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I am not aware of any children born of this
union.

Hayes then married Lyda Gilmer on 30 December 1911 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Lyda Gilmer was born 2 April 1891 in Elizabeth, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; and died January 1970
in Westminster, Orange County, California. Presumably this marriage also ended in divorce, because
Hayes filed for divorce in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in April 1921. I could not
find evidence of the divorce being granted, however, at least not in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Lyda Gilmer was a daughter of [unknown] Gilmer and Lizzie [surname unknown]. Hayes and Lyda had one
child:

1.) Vernon Bumbaugh, born 4 March 1912 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died April
1973.

Hayes then married Elizabeth [surname unknown]. I have no information on her.

Information on Hayes Vernon Bumbaugh gathered from:

Record of marriage license in Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Series G #10588
Volume 76 page 98. The marriage was performed by Reverend Geo. F. Rosenmiller at the Sims' home at
1703 Jenny Lind. Since Hazel was not yet 21 years old, her father, Frank E. Sims, had to sign a
consent to the marriage of a child or ward form.

Announcement of engagement in "The Daily News", McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, dated
Tuesday, 10 March 1908. It reads: Engagement News. The engagement of Miss Hazel Sims, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Sims, of 1763 Jenny Lind street, to Mr. Hayes Bumbaugh, has been announced.
The engagement will terminate in a wedding on June 18th at the home of the bride's parents. The
ceremony will be performed by the Rev. George F. Rosenmuller, rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal
church. Both are prominent young people. The bride's father is engaged in the grocery business in
Walnut street. Mr. Bumbaugh is a moulder employed in the tube works foundry.

Wedding announcement in "The Daily News", McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, dated
Wednesday, 17 June 1908. It reads: Tasteful Wedding at Sims Residence. Miss Hazel Sims and Hayes
Vernon Bumbaugh Are United. One of the most tasteful of the home weddings of the month was that of
Miss Hazel Sims and Mr. Hayes Vernon Bumbaugh, which took place last evening at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Sims, of 1703 Jenny Lind street, in the presence of a company
comprising only the relatives and immediate friends of the young couple. At 8 o'clock the members of
the bridal party entered the parlor and took their places before the Rev. George F. Rosenmuller,
rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal church, who read the solemn marriage service of his denomination.
The bride was given away by her father. She wore an attractive gown of white chiffon and lace over
white satin. Her attendants were the Misses Elizabeth Loeffler and Florence May Sims, who wore
lingerie frocks of white organdie. Soon after the ceremony a wedding supper was served, and later
Mr. and Mrs. Bumbaugh left over the Baltimore & Ohio railroad for an eastern journey. They will
visit Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Atlantic City, and will return at the close
of the month. After July 9 they will be at home at 1611 Fifth avenue.

Record of divorce in Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Case #338 April 1909 C.C.
P. No. 2. Hayes and Hazel were divorced on 17 July 1909 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. Hazel filed for divorce, stating that Hayes "was guilty of such indignities to
libellant's person as to render her condition intolerable and life burdensome."

Record of marriage license in Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Series H #21122
volume 83 page 187. The marriage was performed by George B. Couch. Since Lyda was not yet 21 years
of age, her mother had to sign a consent to the marriage of a child or ward form.

Note: Hayes filed for divorce from Lyda in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in April 1921
#1938. However, the divorce was never granted, at least not in Allegheny County. Nonetheless, Hayes
did marry a third time to an Elizabeth (surname unknown), to whom he was married at the time of his
death. Lyda lived until 1970, as evidenced by her social security number (see notes under Lyda
Gilmer).
