From Scott Bumbaugh:

Here is information on the family of John Wesley Bumbaugh and Malissa J. Schnatterly. They are my
great-great-grandparents.

John Wesley Bumbaugh was born 8 December 1852, probably in Rockingham County, Virginia, the son of
James Bumbaugh and Isabella Peterson. He died 1 September 1921 in Dravosburg, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Richland Cemetery in Dravosburg, PA. On 3 August 1873, probably
in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he married Malissa J. Schnatterly (yes, her name is spelled
MALISSA), the daughter of Henry Walters Schnatterly and Jane Campbell (the daughter of Thomas
Campbell and Elizabeth). Malissa J. Schnatterly was born 30 March 1855 in New Geneva, Nicholson
Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died 8 January 1924 in Dravosburg, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. She is buried with John in the Richland Cemetery in Dravosburg, PA.

They had thirteen children:

1.) Alverda May Bumbaugh, born 31 August 1874 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died 23
June 1964.  On 17 April 1902 she married Peter Robert Harrison, born 11 November 1876 in England;
died 1921 in Dravosburg, Allegheny County, PA. They are both buried in the Richland Cemetery in
Dravosburg, PA. Alverda and Peter had six children.

was married twice. He first married Susan (Susannah) Bashoor on 2 December 1896 in Reynoldton,
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Susan was born 16 October 1879 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, the
daughter of Jacob Bashoor and Carlene (surname unknown). Susan died between 1900 and 1910. They had
one daughter. William then married Sylvia (surname unknown) about 1920. Sylvia was born abt 1877 in
Ohio.

4.) Stella W. Bumbaugh, born 24 September 1879 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She
died 16 May 1940 in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Versailles Cemetery
in McKeesport, PA. On 6 February 1900 she married William Joseph Sample, the son of Moses Sample and
Louisa (surname unknown). William Joseph Sample was born 23 June 1876 in Greenock, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. Stella and Joseph had four children. William would later abandon the family and move
to Ohio.

died 18 September 1848 in Grandview, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Richland
Cemetery in Dravosburg, PA. She was married twice. On 16 April 1903 she married Frank Butler.
Frank Butler was born 5 October 1879 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I know nothing else about
him. She married a second time about 1909 to Frank Baldwin. Frank Baldwin was born about 1873 in
Pennsylvania and died 8 April 1951. They had two children.

Information gathered from:

!1870 Census for Lyon Township, Preston County, West Virginia, page 100, line 17. John's surname is
spelled Bumbarg, and he is listed as being 19 years old, place of birth Virginia. He is living with
Benjamin W. Flynn (28 years old, Virginia), James W. Flynn (aged 9, West Virginia), and William S.
(?) Flynn (aged 4, West Virginia). Who are they?

!1880 Census for 2nd Ward, McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania page 389. It lists John
Bumbaugh (aged 28, PA; iron molder; parents both PA);  wife Malissa (aged 25, PA, parents both PA);
daughter Alverda, aged 5, PA; parents both PA); daughter Belle (aged 3, PA, parents both PA); son
William (aged 2, PA; parents both PA); daughter Estella [sic] (aged 8 months, PA; parents both PA);
brother Frank (aged 17, PA, laborer; parents both PA); brother William (aged 15, PA, laborer; parents
both PA); and brother Albert (aged 12, PA; parents both PA).

!1900 US Census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania vol 23., ed 436, sheet 17, line 14.
The family was living at 228 W. Fifth Avenue, McKeesport, PA.  It lists John (aged 49, Dec 1850, VA);
Malissa (aged 45, March 1855, PA); Alverda M. (aged 25, August 1874, PA); Nellie B. (aged 19, April
1881, PA); Charles R. (aged 17, July 1882, PA); George A. (aged 15, March 1884); Grant D. (aged 14,
October 1885); and Hayes V. (aged 13, born March 1886). The census also indicates that Malissa had
thirteen children, and that eight were living. The census also indicates that Alverda's father was
born in Pennsylvania, whereas the other children's father was born in Virginia. Was Alverda not a
daughter of John Wesley, or is this a mistake on the part of the census taker? I personally think
this is an error on the part of the census taker. Alverda's death certificate lists John Wesley and
Malissa as her parents.

!1910 census for McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (012-0143-0007). It reports that John W.
was a foundry foreman, and that both his parents were born in Virginia. It also indicates that he
and Malissa (Mellissa) had been married 35 years.

!1920 census for Dravosburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (10-78-18-26), records that John (68, VA)
was an iron moulder at the Axe and Tool Company. It also records that his parents were both from
Virginia. Melissa is listed as being 64. They were living on Hill Street.

!Death Certificate from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for John Wesley Bumbaugh. The date of burial is
illegible on the death certificate. The death certificate indicates he was born in West Virginia.
However, in 1852 there was no West Virginia. Therefore, he must have been born in the part of
Virginia that remained in the Union at the time of the Civil War. The information was filled out by
Carrie Hardman of Euclid, Pennsylvania. There was no Carrie or Caroline in John Wesley's own family.
 However, he did have a sister named Caroline, who used the nickname Carrie. It is likely that this
was his sister.
