Research Notes -- David G Brewer
Included here is correspondence received recently by me from Doctor Norbert Klatt of Germany
regarding an "Anatomical Specialty" observed by the famous professor Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in
1786 regarding a "Heinrich Emme of G" (possibly Gross Schneen?). I found it interesting and this may
be a sighting of an Emme family heretofore undocumented. Many thanks to Dr. Klatt for sharing this
information.

--------------------

Dear Mr Brewer!

The original German sentence in the mentioned letter reads:

"Heinrich Emme ein Bauer im Dorfe G. hat (ich weiß nicht durch was für
einen Zufall) am rechten Fuße zwey zusammen verwachsene Zehen, und allen
seinen 9 Kindern, worunter eine Zwillings=Geburt ist, ist auf dieselbe
Weise, und an demselben Fuße, dieser Fehler angeboren."

English translation:
"to Heinrich Emme a farmer in the village of G. (I know not by what a
coincidence) has been grown together two toes on the right foot and all
his nine children, among whom one twin's = birth, having this anatomical
variety in the same way and on the same foot."

Whether my history assignment is correct (G = Groß Schneen), I do not
know. The background of this short report is the insufficient knowledge
about the biological inheritance.

The whole letter will be published in the near future.

Yours sincerely

N. Klatt

Dear Dr. Klatt,

Thank you for your correspondence. I am the chief researcher for the Brewer-Miller Genealogy
website, which includes information on the Emme ancestry, of which I am a descendant. My
Great-Grandmother was Rosa Ann Pearl Emme, and she was a descendant of Johan Christoph Ludwig Emme,
who came to America in the early 1800's from Groß Schneen. I am not aware of the anatomical
specialty that you mention, but the family has a history of producing twins, and my Mother was a
twin. I have written to my cousin James Emme and to Bernard Mayhle to see if they have any
information about this specialty and will certainly write back to you with any information I may
find.

I would be interested in a transcription of the letter you mention, along with any other information
you might have regarding this family. It has been difficult to trace the family very much in
Germany, but this is mostly because of my lack of expertise in German Research.

Best Regards,

David Brewer

Dear Mr Mayhle,
With interest I have read your genealogy. It gives me the reason to
write to you. In a letter of 14 April 1786 to the famous professor
Johann Friedrich Blumenbach is mentions a family \"Emme\" in \"G\". After
your genealogy, I believe that this \"G\" is \"Groß Schneen\", a village 10
km south of Göttingen. The family Emme is mentioned because of an
anatomical speciality, because the parents and children, including
twins, had on the right foot two toes which have grown together. This
anatomical speciality would allow me an identification of the mentioned
family Emme. Hence my question: is there an indication in the family
tradition to such anatomical speciality?
         Yours sincerely,
               Dr. Norbert Klatt
